What To Look For In A Contractor!

Hello Everyone! Wanted to talk a bit about what to look for in a contractor. Time and time again I hear stories or see work that is not acceptable, because of this others are hesitant to take the steps needed to get their dream kitchen, basement and/or necessary upgrades to their homes! When my team and I will finish a project, our clients will be so ecstatic. They tell us how wonderful and easy it was to work with us, which is exactly what we strive for. The project gets done on time, regardless of any circumstances including last minute changes, we make it happen! The less stress or hassle on the client, the better.

This is not the case for so many homeowners who are looking to renovate their homes. I can not count how many times we have been called to quote work that needs to be REDONE after a "contractor" has failed to achieve what was needed and on top of that are 2-3 weeks behind deadline. On our last renovation we decided, with our client, that it would be best to demo the entire thing, then my team cleaned the mess and started from scratch. You can imagine the time and effort that this took on all sides! The contractor charged double the market price for installing vinyl planks and I could go on and on about the baseboards but all I'll say is it looked like someone wasn't taught how to stack Legos properly back in kindergarten. That being said, there is a way to avoid the headache!

Here are some helpful tips to avoid a nightmare of a contractor:
1. Make sure they are licensed and insured. I understand we all have to start somewhere but if they are knowledgeable in the business they will have BOTH of these! The last thing you need is an individual putting a drywall screw through electrical wires or a trim nail through a water line. If they are working on your home and are not properly insured, there will only be so many options for you if an accident was to occur. One of those options will be looking for a contractor that is licensed to come fix the work which = more time + money.
2. Have more than ONE estimate done. I always say don't go with the very first quote that seems reasonable. It is worth your time to weigh your options, take time and do some research on who you are hiring to work on something as important as your home! Another thing to consider is if your budget is realistic. I love to find a good deal, BUT consider the quality of work and the time frame you are willing to work with. A good team and a knowledgeable contractor may cost a little more, but can get the work done more efficiently. Dad always says "You're not that rich to have the work done twice".
3. Ask Questions! & Put it all in writing. I have seen it several times "to build and finish a deck, $15,000." As a contractor I still ask "WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?!" What is the time frame? What all is included? Materials? Labor? Etc. So ask questions, if everything is legitimate they should be fully capable of answering. On top of that, have everything written out and described for you. If it isn't written, there is nothing holding that contractor to it. Check the work and then check it again, if something is not to your liking you have every right to have it fixed (as long as it is in the contract).

If after a project is said to be complete and you aren't willing to give them a 5 star review, then the project is not complete! My company, 5Star Renovations strives for the best review possible, even if that means going above and beyond what was expected. For us, word of mouth (Referrals) is how we continue to grow and is at the utmost importance. This assures great business ethics and satisfied clients every time! Trust is vital in working together effectively. I strive to make clients feel as comfortable as possible, that way we can have an open line of communication. I have clients who have become close friends of my family, I even have a stocking on the mantle this holiday season. So, if that means 5Star Renovations is the first thing that comes to mind when a neighbor, family member and/or friend mentions getting a project started around the house then I am doing my job.
Just remember, if you are paying the money to get that dream project completed at your home, you need to be completely satisfied with the work! With A LOT of communication, a qualified contractor and following the steps I've talked about today, you will have a project started in no time with as little stress as possible!
